Maize Ear Rot

maize ear rot, caused by Gibberella zea (Fusarium graminearum)

Ink painting/drawing of maize ear rot, caused by Gibberella zea (Fusarium graminearum).

The painting shows a corn cob, with a brown opened husk, and an exposed cob. The kernels on the cob are yellow near the base. Near the tip, infection has taken hold, with white and pink cottony mould surrounding the kernels. The infected kernels are a tan colour.

Iowa State IPM (pest management people) (@ISU_IPM) sent me a haiku as an accompaniment for my painting.

The tweet states:

“Gibberella rot

Pink gold and mycotoxins

Vestige of an ear

#phytopoetry haiku to go with @hgpennington’s wonderful artwork. @alisonrISU @CropNetwork

N.B. I believe that this tweet is a product of S. E. Bartholomew (@PhytoPoetry)’s work.
