Wine Painted in Oils, Oil Painted in Wine

14 Jun 2021

I painted my wine using oil paints, focusing on capturing the reflections in the glass and bottle.

The oil painting depicts a grey countertop against a tiled wall. On the countertop, there sits a dark green wine bottle, and a half-full glass, both reflecting the surrounding light.

One of my friends joked that since I had painted my wine in oils, I should paint my oil in wine.

Challenge accepted.

After painting my wine in oils, I took on the challenge of painting my oil in wine.

Using red wine as my medium, I painted two bottles from my kitchen: olive oil and rapeseed (canola) oil. Unfortunately, I couldn’t use the wine from my original painting, as there was none left by this point.

The painting depicts a maroon countertop and a tiled wall. On the countertop, there is a dark maroon bottle of olive oil and a smaller, lighter bottle of rapeseed oil.

To enhance the highlights, I picked them out in white wax before starting painting. I then built up the image by layering wine, allowing each layer to dry before adding the next.

By the time I finished, my office smelt amazing!
