Barley Powdery Mildew

Blumeria graminis f.sp. hordei

The ink painting/ drawing shows a Blumeria graminis f.sp. hordei colony on the surface of a barley leaf.

The painting shows jewel-like erect conidiophores, rising from the surface of the leaf. Grey hyphae are shown expanding over the leaf.

Inspired by Prof. Pietro Spanu’s photography

My Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei painting won the ‘Magnified’ section of the American Phytopathological Society’s Art in Phytopathology competition!

The image shows a tweet with the caption:

“Join us this week as we congratulate the 2022 Art in Phytopathology Contest winners! Today Featuring the Magnified winner - Blumeria graminis - beauty in infection by Helen Pennington (@hgpennington). CONGRATULATIONS [celebrate emoji] [party popper emoji] #ArtInPhytoPathology #PlantHealth #SciArt”

I paid $90 to join APS, to win $50 😂 but it’s really not the money that counts. It’s knowing that I won!

The picture shows a characteristic Blumeria fungal haustorium within an infected cell.
